Electric Power Steering

Your full blown race car runs a battery, it runs an alternator as well. When you need full throttle power down the straights, there is still parasitic losses in the power steering pump. You know how many people are selling underdrive pulleys on the market. The ultimate underdrive pulley has got to be taking the pulley off completely!

Depending on the configuration of your pulley drive system, you may simply take the pump and its own belt off, or you may be able to purchase a new shorter belt that simply bypasses the place where the pump's pulley usually resides. We have worked out a simple solution for E36 cars that replaces the power steering pump with an idler pulley. The feel of the system is identical to the factory system as you maintain your factories rack.

Two packages are being sold for this product:

Package 1: If you drive an E36 race car, we can sell you a turnkey product that can be installed with modifications that should be within the reach of the average "shade tree mechanic". This kit includes a 100 amp fuse, and comes with a modified power steering hose to facilitate easy installation. One of the benefits of this solution is that you may mount the power steering reservoir in a new location, preferably not below the intake manifolds of the engine for easier access. We have preferred installation of the electric pump in the passenger footwell, on the floor for access and weight distribution. This kit includes everything from the bulkhead adaptors and hoses to terminated wires for a kit that mimics our installation, or you can choose to purchase hoses and connectors on your own. No welding is required for this project. Wiring requirements are minimal aside from the very high current draw. You must run an alternator with this system as the draw is quite large at full lock. In the event of an alternator failure, the system reverts to manual steering to avoid draining the battery. We would caution racers that wildly underdriven alternators might cause problems at idle, and in fact, we have installed our unit to be turned on only once we leave the pits to avoid draining our "race" battery.

Package 2: If you are adventurous, you can buy the bare bones of this kit. In that case we would supply you with the electric pump, a wire harness and fuse, and directions for plumbing and different electrical installation options. We do not consider the fuse optional for safety reasons, and in fact, it is very important to have a proper fuse in this system as the draw is quite large, and could easily start a fire if the wrong guage wire is used, or the system is not fused properly.

We also have provisions to modify your power steering hoses to standard AN fittings if you would like.

Driver School Communicators

This product is currently available for E36 coupes and sedans. It replaces the factories central ashtray and allows the driver and student to plug in to the car. The communicator will run off the cars battery. Volume and on off switches are easily accessable.

The primary advantages to this system are that you will not have the communicator bouncing around in the car, nor will the the volume suddenly cut out or decrease as the instructor holds on for dear life. A side benefit is that we re-wire the flimsy earphones and microphones to have a sturdy plug and wire.
